Dream Meaning of Sword

In the classical Ottoman and Turkish dream tradition, the sword is a sign of authority, strength, eloquence, and victory. It may announce a government post, a gain of property, or the power to overcome enemies. The dream sword is also closely tied to the family: its sheath, blade, and fittings each carry a separate meaning.

Seeing a Sword

If you dream of seeing a sword, the usual reading is that you will rise in rank or obtain something you have been striving for. It can mean a secure appointment, a profitable possession, or new influence among people. A sword resting in its sheath without a hilt is traditionally said to represent the woman of the house, while a sword drawn from the sheath points to a child or to the carrying out of an order. Finding a sword that hangs on a wall or lies on the ground and taking it for yourself suggests that you will recover a right that was taken from you. Holding a drawn sword in your hand means you will be superior to your enemies.

Girding and Wearing a Sword

To put a sword around your waist is a favourable omen in most classical sources. It means you will enter an important position or begin a great undertaking. If the sword belt loosens and the blade trails along the ground, you may soon become weary of your profession, and a belt that is too short shows a lack of perseverance. A broken belt has different results for different people: a merchant suffers loss, an official is dismissed, and others face grief. A sword firmly tied to the waist is a sign of long life, and each sword you wear may also indicate one additional marriage. In particular, wearing two swords, one on each side, suggests that you will hold two posts at once.

Drawing and Sheathing a Sword

Drawing a sword from its sheath with ease is a happy sign: you will have a child who listens to you. Sheathing your sword, especially if you are unmarried, points to marriage. Yet if the sheath breaks in your hand while you draw the blade, the dream is serious. The substance of the sword shows the kind of advantage that will come to you. A golden sword is a sign of favour from people in high places; an iron sword strengthens your work and your command; a sword made of tin or lead brings good from a noble woman. A sword decorated with precious stones is a very good sign, especially for someone in public office, as it means honour, respect, and increase. A wooden sword, on the other hand, points to ruined affairs, and a sword too heavy to lift means you will hear painful and insulting words. If your sword shines and gleams, you will be respected by those above you. A double-edged sword shows that your orders carry authority.

Giving, Receiving, and Losing a Sword

Receiving a sword as a gift means your orders will be obeyed and your word will be accepted. To receive many swords at once is a sign of wealth. Exchanging a sword with your wife is traditionally read as a sign of a coming child, with the blade and the sheath standing for a son or a daughter. If you see a high official girding a sword, you can expect power and support from the state. Playing with a sword indicates that you will enter politics, or that you will be admired for your skill, eloquence, or way with children. To lose your sword, sell it, pawn it, or let it fall from your hand can be read as dismissal, separation, loss of power, or a decline in strength, depending on your situation.

Classical sword dreams are rarely literal; they speak in the language of rank, family, and conflict. Pay attention to what the sword is made of, how it is used, and what happens to it, because these details decide whether the dream points to honour or to loss.
