Dream Meaning of Finger

Fingers in a dream speak of the people and things your hands hold close: your spouse, children, parents, brothers and sisters, helpers, friends, possessions, talents, and even your strength. In the same tradition, the five fingers of the right hand are seen as the five daily prayers, so their state can point to the state of your faith. Whatever happens to your fingers in a dream is usually a reflection of what is happening in these areas of your waking life.
Long, Slender, and Beautiful Fingers
Long, slender, or unusually beautiful fingers are one of the most encouraging signs in this tradition. They are taken to mean that you will do your work with skill and care, write or create with eloquence, succeed in trade, and if you are struggling, receive the attention and support of wealthy people. Such fingers also suggest that your talents are growing and that love and worldly affairs will settle into a good order. Beautiful fingers are often read as a promise of better fortune and contentment.
Right and Left Hand
The right hand and left hand are read differently. The five fingers of the right hand correspond to the five daily prayers: the thumb to the dawn prayer, the index finger to the noon prayer, the middle finger to the afternoon prayer, the ring finger to the evening prayer, and the little finger to the night prayer. The left hand, by contrast, points to the children of your brother or sister, those you care for as close relatives. Seeing your right-hand fingers longer than your left is taken as a sign that you will show goodness to relatives and friends, while long arms with short fingers suggests courage and generosity.
Cut, Dried, or Lost Fingers
If a finger is cut off, dried up, or otherwise made useless, the dream generally means you will not benefit from your parents, children, or property, and that your livelihood or craft may suffer. The exact finger matters. Losing the thumb is linked to setting out on a journey; the index finger to neglecting prayer; the middle finger to the death of a leader or head of your community; the ring finger to wasting or losing money; and the little finger to the death of a grandchild or nephew. When the right hand's fingers dry up, you are warned that you may oppress the weak, while drying on the left hand is a sign you may lose a brother.
Interlocking, Joining, and Fist
Joining your fingers together into prayer or clasping them is usually a good sign: it speaks of relief from distress, unity among relatives and nephews, performing prayers, and making agreements in business. But if you see your fingers crossed or intertwined in a forced way, many interpreters warn of poverty, hardship, and a narrowing of your circumstances. Some also read this as a warning that you may be idle, neglecting your work and your prayers, or that your relatives are uniting to protect themselves from harm you might cause. Seeing yourself make a fist with fingers pressed together means your brothers and close relatives will gather together.
Biting, Scratching, and Cracking Fingers
Biting or scratching your fingers in a dream points to rude and unseemly behavior. If you know the person who bites or scratches you, expect a lesson in manners from that person; if you do not know them, you must teach yourself better conduct. To see someone biting another person's fingertips means the biter will do harm to your affairs, and it also suggests that the person bitten is ill-mannered. Cracking your knuckles is read as hearing unpleasant words from your relatives and becoming badly thought of among them. A sick person who dreams of biting the tips of their own fingers is said to be nearing the end of life.
Extra or Missing Fingers
Extra fingers generally bring good fortune: more children, wealth, property, and blessings, and an increase in prayer, knowledge, or relatives. But for someone in power, extra fingers are not a compliment—they warn of cruelty, greed, and a lack of justice. Missing fingers, on the other hand, mean a loss of income, children, or something you rely on. If you dream that one finger has grown where another should be, it is taken as a sign that you are delaying or mixing up your prayers, or performing a duty at the wrong time.
Burning, Hurting, or Licking Fingers
Burning your fingers in a dream is a warning that you may commit a sin or an offense. Painful fingers indicate that your affairs will be disrupted, and a sore or swollen finger can mean worries about children or property. To see yourself licking your fingers suggests that you will gain only a small amount of livelihood, exactly the amount and quality of what you lick. If you put henna on your fingers and it holds well, you will receive goodness from your husband or from those close to you; if the henna does not take, a woman is warned that her husband does not truly love her.
Toes
Toes in a dream are read separately from the fingers of the hand. They represent adornment, order, and the way your affairs are progressing. Seeing your toes strong and well-shaped is a good sign of leadership and success, while thin, weak toes suggest that things will not go well. Crooked or twisted toes mean the opposite of what you want, and if you find that you cannot walk because of an injury to your toes, you are likely to fall into distress over lost property. In general, healthy toes are a promise that patience will bring reward.
In the older books, fingers are also read as days, months, or years, and nails are taken as extra prayers, almsgiving, or weapons, depending on what the finger itself stands for. When you wake, think of what your fingers were doing in the dream and which hand they belong to, for the dream is usually not about the finger itself but about the people and duties your hands carry.
